A Perfect Friday in April

April 24th was one of those wedding days that reminded me why I love what I do.

When I woke up that Friday morning, the forecast wasn't exactly promising. The weather app seemed determined to predict rain all day long, and the wind certainly made its presence known. But despite the constant chance of showers hanging over West Michigan, the rain never came. Not once.

Now, I can't say for certain what made the difference, but the bride's dad, my Uncle Todd, may have had a little something to do with it. Throughout the day, he kept everyone updated with reports from his "weather guy," carefully tracking the system moving through the area and reassuring us that we were going to be just fine. Whether it was insider information or just optimistic faith, he ended up being right.

The result was a beautiful spring day at Pigeon Creek Event Center in West Olive, Michigan. Nestled alongside the scenic golf course, the venue provided the perfect backdrop for Tessa and Ross's celebration, with its bright, modern design and beautiful outdoor spaces.

But what made this wedding especially meaningful for me wasn't just the location or the weather, it was the people.

Tessa is my cousin, and getting the opportunity to photograph a family member's wedding is something truly special. As photographers, we spend countless weekends documenting some of the most important days in other people's lives. We celebrate with them, cry with them, and tell their stories. But when it's your own family standing at the altar, every moment carries a little extra weight.

I wasn't just photographing the bride getting ready with her mom, I was watching my cousin prepare to walk into a new season of life.

I wasn't just capturing her dad seeing her in her wedding dress, I was watching my uncle experience one of the proudest moments a father can have.

I wasn't simply documenting family portraits, I was standing among people I've known my entire life, preserving memories that will be treasured for generations.

One of my favorite parts of the day was seeing how clearly Jesus and the Gospel were woven throughout the entire celebration.

In a world where weddings can sometimes become centered on details, timelines, and decorations, which I myself am very guilty of, Tessa and Ross continually pointed everyone back to Christ. Their ceremony wasn't just about two people making promises to each other; it was a picture of God's covenant love. The messages shared, the prayers offered, and the worship woven throughout the day reminded everyone present that marriage was created by God and is ultimately meant to reflect Christ's love for His people.

The Gospel was evident in the way they spoke about commitment, sacrifice, grace, and faithfulness. It was evident in the community of family and friends surrounding them. And it was evident in the joy that filled the room, not just because two people were getting married, but because God had been faithful in bringing them together.

As the day came to an end, I found myself feeling incredibly grateful. Grateful for family. Grateful for the privilege of preserving moments like these. And grateful for a wedding day that so beautifully reflected the love of Christ.

Tessa and Ross, thank you for trusting me to document your day. It was an honor not only as your photographer but as your cousin. I pray your marriage continues to be a testimony of God's goodness and faithfulness for many years to come.

Congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. Chapin.
